Bodhgaya is a small town in the Bihar region in north-western India. Known for its mix of religions including Buddhism and Jainism, Bihar is the third most populated region in India with the highest percentage of poverty. Tourists rarely visit this region, but among those who do, go in search of Bodhgaya, a holy ground for Buddhists where Siddhartha Gautama, otherwise known as Buddha, reached enlightenment.
Over the last few years, “Solidarios con India” (translated as “Together with India”) gives a platform to the most disadvantaged inhabitants of this region. Its aim is to create awareness of the Bohdtree School where the children from the remote areas of this Indian region can study, thereby raising their standard of living for the benefit of the wider community. This school is inclusive regardless of gender, religion or cast, so that the younger generation can receive good quality education. They will also learn how their fundamental human rights are protected in a country where discrimination and deprivation rank among the biggest social ills.
The school also offers opportunities for personal development through initiatives that collaborate with neighbouring communities, thereby increasing the resources available. At the Bohdtree School, the students, their families, friends, teachers and local inhabitants come together to create a network that fosters learning and mutual support for the benefit of all.
TM wanted to make a contribution to this charitable project with a donation that will go towards some of the basic needs of these 500 boys and girls at the Centre during their following school year. These include access to academic resources, health care and transport to school throughout the entire year.
This article is intended to support this wonderful initiative known in Spanish as “Solidarios con India” (“Together with India”) by encouraging our local community to show their support by attending a special event taking place on 11th August from 21:00 at las Eras de la Sal located in Paseo Vistalegre, s/n, 03181 Torrevieja. The Sikh community of Torrevieja will be performing a traditional Indian ceremony and those attending can contribute to the Bohdtree School project by purchasing a T-shirt or tasting the array of delicious food and drinks being sold. All proceeds will go towards the children of Bodhgaya.
Among those attending will be members of the Torrevieja Town Hall, representatives from the Indian Embassy in Spain and a number of local companies contributing towards the cause, including TM Real Estate Group. This is a colourful event not to be missed!
