Have you just moved into a new house and are unsure how to arrange your living room? Getting the layout right is a challenge and creating a balance is important so that the décor and space work in harmony. There are some essential aspects that you must bear in mind and, furthermore, depending on the shape of the room, you will have to take into account its characteristics. Today we are going to explain how you can make the most of your rectangular living room.
Important aspects to consider when arranging your living room
Outline a walkway
The wider they are, the more spacious the room will feel. The minimum recommended would be about 80cm and at least 1 metre if your furniture has drawers.
Seating area
An open-plan living and dining area is very common nowadays. You can use the back of the furniture to separate areas and it is recommended that you leave about 90 centimetres behind chairs so that you can move them easily.
Furniture spacing
There should be 40 centimetres between the coffee table and the sofa, and 15 centimetres between the sofa and the side tables.
How to arrange a rectangular living room
Rectangular living rooms, as their name suggests, are longer than they are wide. This is why you should opt for a horizontal layout if you want to create a sensation of more space. How is this achieved? By arranging the furniture in an L-shape.
L-shaped sofas
Shallow, elongated seats are perfect for furnishing this type of living room. With this type of sofa you will be able to divide the space without wasting space.
Lighting
Use light to improve brightness in areas with no windows or where it is darker. A good lighting balance will help you to make your home feel more spacious.
Reading area
If the size of your living room allows it, it is also advisable to try to create separate spaces. For example, a reading corner can be a good idea. An armchair and a floor lamp in one of the corners will give the impression that the space is much larger than it is.
Narrow units are best
Particularly if the TV and storage unit is in the passageway, it is preferable to use narrow units, and if you can hang the TV on the wall, even better. This creates an open, uncluttered environment.
